ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS

As we get older, our skin undergoes changes

When we age our skin naturally forms lines or wrinkles with everyday facial expression.

These dynamic lines can be managed effectively with anti-wrinkle injections as a preventive or therapeutic treatment before or after they appear.

Anti-wrinkle injections can achieve a softening or relaxing of fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes, forehead, brow, and also around the mouth and chin. Anti-wrinkle injections are also commonly and effectively used to treat a range of medical conditions such as chronic migraines, teeth grinding (bruxism) and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Why do I have these lines?

Everybody develops fine lines as we age. This can be more exaggerated in certain areas with continued and repeated use of facial muscles. Other ageing factors such as loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, loss of fat in the subcutaneous layer just under the skin and changes to facial bones can cause dynamic lines eventually form static lines on the face that do not disappear.

How do wrinkle relaxers work?

Anti-wrinkle injections are also known as wrinkle relaxers. They work by blocking the transmitting messages between nerve and muscle cells, resulting in muscle cells being unable to contract. Think of it like a little holiday for those overworked muscles on your face.

By targeting a specific muscle group, we work to temporarily reduce movement in the area. Wrinkle relaxers are effective because they work in two ways: reduced muscle activity means the appearance of existing lines and wrinkles is less visible. It also prevents over-active muscles from forming new wrinkles.

Areas treated by anti-wrinkle injections

Wherever there are dynamic or static lines or over-active muscles, anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) may be useful to create a fresher, more youthful appearance. They are also used to treat many medical conditions including excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraine and teeth grinding (bruxism). As doctors, we understand the complex network of muscles in the face and neck and can find a suitable treatment plan for you.

Common treatment areas include:

Crow’s feet +

‘Crow’s feet’ are the lines around the eyes that form when you enjoy life to the max. Smiling, laughing and talking will all contribute to small creases forming at the outside of the eye area. Over time, they can extend laterally and spread down to the cheek area. Anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) can soften the lines and make you appear more youthful as you smile. They can also be used to prevent superficial or deep lines forming around the eye area.

Frown lines +

Frown lines are the lines that appear between the eyebrows when you are concentrating hard or are present even at rest. They are also known as number elevens ‘11s’. Strong frown lines can make you look angry, sad or worried even when you feel fine. Anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) can soften the lines and restore a more relaxed, youthful look to your face.

Forehead lines +

Raising your eyebrows is one of the most common ways to show expression in your face. When you use this muscle (frontalis muscle) frequently, it can create horizonal lines running across your forehead that may appear when you talk or are present at rest. Anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) can soften the lines and restore a more relaxed, smoother appearance to your forehead. For deeper lines or lines that still appear at rest, dermal fillers may also be used.

Bunny lines on the nose +

The lines that appear on either side of your nose are called bunny lines. They start near the inner corner of your eye and extend down, inwards and across your nose when you wrinkle it. Bunny lines form when you laugh and may develop more strongly when facial movement is relaxed elsewhere on your face. Wrinkle relaxers can be used to smooth these lines and prevent the muscles from becoming overactive.

Upper lip lines and corners of the mouth +

Smokers lines or perioral lines are the lines around the upper lip. They are called smokers lines, due to the constant pursing of the lips, but they are also common in people who have never smoked. These lines often become more visible with age as the skin loses collagen and elastin. As a result, the skin starts to sag around the mouth. Dermal fillers can be used to restore lost volume, soften the appearance of lines and folds, and refresh and augment the lips. Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used above and below the lips to soften these lines without the use of fillers. However, these injections in the upper and lower lip area have a limited result.

Cheek enhancement +

Volume loss occurring in the mid face due to age or weight loss can be improved with dermal fillers to the cheeks. As well as providing cheek volume, contouring and supporting the lower eyelid area, cheek fillers lift the mid face and take pressure off the fall of skin that occurs in the lower face or jowl area.

Nasolabial folds +

When we age, the fat pads in the cheeks lose volume and fall downwards and inwards, worsening the appearance of the nasolabial fold (the fold between the corner of the nose and the corner of the mouth). Dermal filler to the area underlying this fold can decrease the depth of lines, however, it is most effective when paired with cheek filler to attain more lift and support.

Marionette lines +

Marionette folds and lines are caused by loss of volume, gravity and over-active muscles at the corners of your mouth. They take their name from a marionette puppet’s face and are more common as we age. They can make you look and feel older. Dermal fillers are can be used to restore lost volume, soften the appearance of lines and folds, to enhance your natural facial shape and contour.

Chin dimpling +

Chin dimples appear as an ‘orange peel’ texture on the chin. They appear as part of the ageing process but can make you look older as they become more noticeable. They are caused by the mentalis muscle moving and contracting. Chin dimples can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections to reduce the size and smooth the appearance of chin dimples.

Brow lift +

A need to improve the symmetry of the brows or provide a lift in the eye area is very common. Anti-wrinkle injections to the muscles in this area provide an effective pull and lift.

Chin enhancement +

Chin enhancement is a procedure that involves injecting dermal fillers into areas of the chin to change its appearance. For example, to increase the length, width or profile of the chin. If your chin is an area of concern, injectables are a safe alternative to traditional methods of chin enhancement, which would involve surgery. Dermal fillers are used in small amounts in precise locations to change the shape and contour of the chin to result in a more youthful or chiselled appearance.

Lip enhancement +

While some people naturally have lips that are thinner or asymmetrical, lips are also one of the first areas to show signs of ageing. Dermal fillers can be used to enhance and contour the natural shape of your lips to achieve a fuller, more symmetrical lip that compliments your face. They are used to increase fullness, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve symmetry, create a cupid’s bow or reduce the appearance of scarring. Our priority with any dermal filler in the lip area is to achieve a natural looking result that makes you feel more confident and beautiful.

Lip flip +

Some people prefer to enhance their lips without the use of dermal filler. A small amount of wrinkle relaxer is injected in the upper and lower lip area to slightly turn the lips outward creating an appearance of a fuller lip. It is important to note that there may be some degree of change in the ability to purse lips, whistle, articulate or smile.

Gummy smile +

Gummy smile has several clinical definitions and contributing factors, however, in simple terms a gummy smile is when your smile reveals more of your gums that you would like. The shape and natural movement of your lips is one of the most common things that contribute to a gummy smile. For example if your lips are thinner, shorter or move a lot when you talk or smile it can expose more of your gumline. Wrinkle relaxers are an effective non-surgical treatment for gummy smile by reducing the amount of movement in your lips to reveal less of your gum line.

Teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw slimming +

Teeth grinding can cause the masseter muscles of the jaw to build up. It can also lead to headaches, facial pain and a range of oral health complications. An effective treatment for a widened or square jaw is to use anti-wrinkle injections to relax the muscles. It has the dual purpose of reducing the overactive ‘grinding’ action (and its related complications) and slimming the lower face by relaxing the large masseter muscles of the jaw.

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) +

Some people experience excessive sweating in the underarms, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Sweating tends to be considered excessive when it occurs without the usual stimuli (exercise, stress or increased body temperature) or you sweat in abnormally high volumes over a normal day. It can be an embarrassing and limiting condition and it is important to rule out underlying causes of hyperhidrosis, which can include certain disease, medications and menopause. Where appropriate, muscle relaxing injections can be used to effectively reduce sweating and relieve the symptoms and distress of hyperhidrosis.

Wrinkle relaxers can be used on their own or in combination with dermal fillers. Read more about Anti-wrinkle and Dermal filler injection areas and common uses.

Frequently asked questions about anti-wrinkle treatments

What does anti-wrinkle treatment involve? +

Dr Chiara Parker and Dr Neil Parker meet every new client for a full assessment before any treatment starts. We take time to get to know you before we can design a treatment plan tailored specifically for your needs. Treatments can be performed in the same appointment as your initial consultation. Your appointment may include:

  • Full skin and facial assessment to discuss areas of concerns
  • Clinical photography to monitor progress and changes to skin
  • Opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations for treatment
  • A detailed discussion of the procedure including consent

What to expect during your anti-wrinkle procedure +

Your anti-wrinkle treatment will be conducted by our qualified doctors who have extensive medical training and are highly experienced in cosmetic injecting procedures. Treatment with wrinkle relaxers generally involves:

  • A small volume of fluid injected into the target muscles using a very fine needle
  • The procedure is relatively painless however, some patients may feel a mild stinging sensation during the injection
  • Ice packs or numbing cream can be used to reduce any discomfort
  • The treatment generally takes about 10-15 minutes

When will I see results? +

Results from your wrinkle relaxer will begin to be felt after 2-3 days, however, it takes up to 10-14 days for anti-wrinkle treatments to take a full noticeable effect. For first time treatments we recommend a follow-up appointment after two to three weeks to make sure you are happy with the results. We also like to check to see if we need to adjust the dosage for follow up treatments based on your individual needs. Remember, it may take a few treatments to work out your perfect dose. We must balance your desired results with other factors such as your metabolism, exercise levels and strength of your muscles.

How long do results last? +

The benefits of anti wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) generally last between 3-6 months. Around this time, those muscles are keen to get back to work and muscle activity gradually returns to pre-injection state. Treatment results and longevity will also vary depending on the look you prefer. Higher doses will relax the entire muscle. Smaller doses with some residual movement will achieve a softer, more natural look. Most people find that repeated injections are the best way to maintain more relaxed muscles and prevent new wrinkles forming. By repeating the treatment, muscles weaken over time, meaning potentially longer intervals between treatments.

What happens after my treatment? +

After your anti-wrinkle injection, you may have temporary mild swelling and redness at the injection points and occasionally bruising, but otherwise there is no downtime. We will provide full aftercare instructions at your treatment. There are also some general precautions to reduce the risks of side effects and get the best possible results. These include:

  • Light application of make-up (ie mineral powder) for 12 hours after the procedure
  • Avoid any strenuous activity and exercise for 24 hours
  • No rubbing or massage to the treated area for 24 hours
  • Keeping your head upright and no lying down flat for 4 hours post-treatment
  • Sleep on your back and slightly elevated for the first 24hours
  • Avoid overheating in the first 24 hours (no direct sunlight, saunas, spas or excessive sweating)
  • No facial treatments such as microdermabrasion, laser or peels for 2 weeks post-treatment
  • Apply ice only if directed to reduce any bruising

What are the risks of treatment? +

With any medical procedure there are always risks involved. Dr Chiara Parker and Dr Neil Parker will discuss all risks and contraindications prior to any procedure. While side effects are uncommon, you need to be aware that they may include bruising, redness, mild headache or pain at the treatment site. Some rare side effects include:

  • Temporary drooping of the eyelids (ptosis). Less than 1% of patients experience this side effect which generally lasts only 4 weeks
  • Dropping of the eyebrows or a heavy forehead
  • Asymmetry of the treated area
  • With certain mouth or jaw treatments – difficulty pursing lips, whistling, speaking or smiling As experienced medical practitioners, Parker Aesthetics offer a safe and ethical cosmetic injectables practice. Anti-wrinkle injections can’t be given to people with underlying neurological conditions or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Who can’t have anti-wrinkle injections? +

  • Pregnant women
  • Breast feeding women
  • Patients with neuromuscular disease such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Patients with previous allergies to wrinkle relaxers or fillers products
